Interview

Why has she kept herself isolated from society?

She always felt that society would reject her because her brother ran away. And without her younger brother to take care of, she felt like she had no purpose in life anymore.

Was she ever in love?

No, she has not ever been in love before.

What is her temperament? Does she get angry easily, or does she have a quieter personality?

She is moody and expressive. She gets angered fairly easily, but she can control it most of the time. She definitely does not have a quiet personality.

Out of interest, since you said she was a spinster, is she past the age of ever getting married/having children then? 29/30 seems pretty young. (At least that’s what I always thought the definition of Spinster was)

Back then, women were spinsters if they weren’t married in their early twenties. I don’t know the exact age, but that’s the way it was.

Does she still have any desire to be married?

Yes, she does.

Who is her closest friend?

Her brother, Caleb.

Does she feel constrained by her isolation, since she does not have a naturally quiet personality?

Perhaps somewhat, but she was never close to any of the females in town.

Did she have a good relationship with her younger brother before he ran away?

Yes, she did. She raised him after her mother died giving birth to him and always felt like she was his mother. When he ran away, it nearly broke her heart. Jed had been her life, the main reason she had lived the previous 14 years.

Does she feel guilty, as if she might have kept him there if she had been different?

Yes, she does. She second guesses herself nearly everyday. Was there something she could have done? Could she have stopped her father from beating Jed? Those are questions that haunt her.

Does she have much work to do day to day?

She has the garden to tend to, the cooking, cleaning, and laundry. There is plenty for her to do and when she runs out of things around the house, she can go help her father and brother in the fields.

Do her father and brother depend on her for things?

They depend on her to have the house clean and food on the table. If they get hurt or sick, she is the one who doctors them back to health.  Other than that, they do most everything on their own.
