Today we have a new release to celebrate. Tricia Mingerink is releasing her new book, Dare. Read on to learn about her book, one of her characters, her Facebook party, and the giveaway.
About the Book
Courage could cost him everything.
Third Blade Leith Torren never questions his orders or his loyalty to King Respen until an arrow wound and a prairie blizzard drive him to the doorstep of the girls whose family he once destroyed.
Their forbidden faith and ties to the Resistance could devastate their family a second time.
Survival depends on obedience, but freedom beckons. How far does he dare go to resist the king and his Blades?
No matter what Leith chooses, one thing is certain.
Someone will die.
Character Spotlight
Shadrach Alistair
Relation to other characters: Lord Henry Alistair’s oldest son
Occupation: Captain of Walden’s guards
Appearance: Twenty years old, 6’1” with brown hair and brown eyes.
Character: He has a firm belief in right and wrong, and he pursues what he believes is right whole-heartedly. He is loyal to his friends, and he makes friends easily. He wants others to see him for who he is and not simply Lord Alistair’s son and heir.
Author’s Note: Shadrach’s role in the story grew as I wrote the first draft and revised. He was initially planned to be just a guard. But he developed into so much more than that and claimed his spot in the climax of the story.
What I love about him is that he is such a nice guy. He is willing to do what he needs to do, whether that means leading his men or following someone else’s directions. He is a steady character where a lot of other characters are changing or doubting themselves.
First Draft Trivia: When I write a first draft, I often put blank lines to mark the places where I need to come up with a character name. I started doing that with Shadrach, but as his role grew, I couldn’t keep doing that. I needed a name. I’d always loved the name Shadrach after reading the book Across Five Aprils where the main character’s school teacher and eventual brother-in-law is named Shadrach. I knew the name fit the character, but I wasn’t sure having the name Shadrach in a book that already had Daniel in the Bible as a theme would be too much. I talked it over with my brainstorm buddy, and she told me to go for it. I’m glad I did. I couldn’t imagine him named anything else!
