Book Review: Exiles

Jaye L. Knight’s newest novel, Exiles, has been released! Exiles is the fourth book in the Christian fantasy series, Ilyon Chronicles. Read about it below and be sure to check out the other blog stops on the tour by visiting the official tour page. Don’t forget to enter the giveaway!

I’m also doing a quick review (shorter than my usual ones) and there’s an excerpt at the bottom of the post. But first, here’s a little bit about the book and author.

About the Book

Exiled after their defeat in Samara, the Resistance struggles to find allies in their quest to restore King Balen to his throne and put an end to the emperor’s tyranny. When the crete people refuse to lend their aid, Balen leads a group to Dorland to reason with them and win their support. However, enemies prove to be everywhere, and they find themselves in a fight to keep Dorland from becoming Daican’s latest conquest.

Back in Landale, the arrival of a new enemy forces Trask and Anne to tread more carefully than ever. Tensions are rising, and the enemy is determined to test Anne’s loyalty and root out the location of Trask and the Resistance once and for all.

Feeling trapped within the walls of Valcré, Prince Daniel must contend with an ever-eroding relationship with his father. As their clashes escalate, the situation becomes potentially life threatening when his loyalty is called into question. His sister seems bent on branding him a traitor and actively seeking to condemn him to the fate of those put to death in their father’s new arena. Daniel is certain his father would never execute his only son and heir, but with other forces at work, it might not be that simple.

One small misstep could prove fatal for all.

Review

I had the privilege of reading this book before it’s release. Of all the books I’ve read by Jaye, I think this is one of my favorites. All the turmoil in the characters, the uncertainty, and getting out of their comfort zones. It was all so deep and true to real life. I learned a few things from the book even though it’s fantasy AND fiction. I highly encourage you to read this book, and the whole series.

Excerpt

After the greetings, Talas asked his mother, “Where are Father and Grandfather?”

Tress motioned deeper into the house. “They’re building on to the back porch . . . and having one of their debates, I believe.”

Talas’s lips quirked wryly, and he motioned for everyone to follow. Up a short flight of steps and around the other side of the tree, they entered a spacious living area with a wide door leading out to an equally large porch. Just outside stood two crete men. The first was middle-aged with a profile like Talas’s. The second was older, his dark hair heavily streaked with gray. They faced each other, the first crete pinching the bridge of his nose, and Kyrin just caught his exasperated words.

“It’s more than sufficient already. There’s no need to go wider.”

The older crete shrugged. “I don’t think another couple of feet would hurt.”

He said it nonchalantly, but Kyrin detected a subtle humor in his expression, almost like a teasing child. Talas did refer to his grandfather as a bit of a rascal.

Talas cleared his throat, and the two men turned. He stepped out to the porch and embraced his father, and then his grandfather, who gave him a couple of hearty slaps on the back.

“I was just wondering when you’d show up for another visit.” The older crete grinned and then his attention shifted past Talas to Kyrin and the others. “You’ve brought friends, I see.”

Talas motioned them all out. Kyrin lingered near Jace, who remained well away from the edge of the porch where the railing was not yet completed. Another round of introductions followed, and they all greeted Talas’s father, Thel, and his grandfather, Varn.

“How long will you be here?” his grandfather asked.

“Until King Balen can convince at least one of the clan leaders to change their position,” Talas answered. “At least that’s the plan.”

“Well, he’s got a difficult task. I shall aid him with my prayers.”

“He’ll surely appreciate that. We all will.”
